Fifty new jobs for Callington firm
Fifty new staff are being sought by Ginsters' Lynher Bakery in Callington.
The new intake of staff is a result of a £13 million bakery expansion project and the new personnel will assist in running the refitted bakery with a view to making it a seven day operation.
The new employees will include chefs, technical machine operators and hygiene managers. The firm hopes to recruit from the local area.
Boy falls from roof
A teenage boy, who fell off the roof of a supermarket in Liskeard on Wednesday evening, was rushed to Derriford hospital in Plymouth.
The 14-year-old boy, who police say had been playing with friends, fell off the roof of the Pioneer supermarket in Barras Road. It is believed he fell about 40' into a courtyard in Westbourne Lane. He is thought to have broken his wrist and dislocated his shoulder. The fire brigade and ambulance services were also called to the incident.
The accident happened around 7.30pm, following a report by members of the public that youngsters were on the roof.
Village celebrates
St Pinnock parish council is celebrating the delivery of a set of title needs for a piece of land in East Taphouse which will become a play area for the children of St Pinnock. The land, donated by Mrs and Mrs W D Gubbins of Gormain Farm, is to be held in trust by the council and with a grant of £24,000 from the County Environmental Trust work should begin soon with the play area ready in early March.
New candidate
The South East Cornwall Conservative Association has adopted 35-year-old Ashley Gray as the prospective parliamentary candidate for the area. Mr Gray, a PR consultant who lives in Somerset, is married with three young children. A Somerset county councillor he is press officer for the South West Conservatives and has many connections in the fishing industry.
PM visits Eden
The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is due to visit the massive Eden Project at Bodelva, near St Austell today (Friday) at l0am. Later he is to travel further west into Cornwall.
Yesterday (Thursday) he was in Exeter and Plymouth.
Vandals attack church windows
An historic 150-year-old stained glass window in St Mary's Church, Callington has been damaged by vandals. The window was peppered by missiles thrown from the road outside, and cracked in more than ten places. The damage was discovered by church warden Peter Hambly, who is also the town's portreeve. He found ball bearings, stones and coins in the church which had been thrown through the window. The cost of repairing the damage is likely to run into thousands.
The police are appealing for witnesses.
