CORNWALL Council is to slash its charges for disabled parking spaces – after a row over a woman who complained when she was told she would be charged £3,800 to mark a space outside her home.

Deb Race’s anger at the proposed charges to create a space near her home in St Austell made national headlines.

The council immediately started a review of its policy on payments for residential disabled parking spaces.

And at their meeting yesterday, councillors confirmed a reduced charge would be implemented right away.

Cornwall Council leader Adam Paynter said following consultation with disability groups, the new charge for residential disabled parking bays would be £350.

He said the fee is in line with other authorities that have a policy to charge for similar services.
