Division Five East Bude II v Duloe DULOE triumphed by 43 runs after travelling to North Cornwall very apprehensively because of the bad weather back at home. True to form, however, Bude was clear and rain- free, and after losing the toss, the visitors were asked to bat first. The young opening pair of Carter and Dan Conway set off at a brisk rate, with 50 coming off 12 overs. After a stand of 83, Ali Carter was caught for a creditable 32. Skipper Harrison promoted himself, but to no avail, which brought 'senior citizens' Hughes and Massey into the fray. They scored freely and were both caught going for their shots. Meanwhile, Conway continued to make light of the bowling, and he was well assisted by Julian, who made 41, and Lewis, who was not out for 26. Conway went on to complete a magnificent century in Duloe's total of 259 for seven. Bude made an encouraging start to the run chase, putting on 45 in quick time for the first wicket. The medium pace bowlers were finding life difficult against a stiff breeze, but old-timer Joyce made light of the conditions to take two for 36 off 10 overs. Bude opener Ian Mill continued to punish the bowlers until he was fooled by Fred Carter's slow one for a very good 69. Young Carter went on to take four for 57 in his spell of bowling. Conway then continued his inspired day by wrapping up the tail with a mean spell of five overs, taking three for 12. Eventually, Bude were all out for 216, after fine catches by Conway and Lewis, to leave Duloe with a 43-run triumph. q q q Trevone v Menheniot II MENHENIOT eeked out a 20-run victory after a close-fought battle at Trevone. Getting to know the geography at Trevone was important. With very short boundaries behind the bowler and an enormous one to mid-wicket on one side, there was a bonus on shot selection to the correct place. John McPherson had the right idea early on with three crisp straight boundaries, but then he was caught at point. This brought together Australian Troy Heffernan and Cornish veteran Ben Pascoe for a fluent stand of 83. Both dealt mainly in boundaries and, with the 100 up in the 30th over, the stage was set for a good score. Immediately both fell to ill-directed pulls off spinner Fuller. This was followed by two cheap dismissals and 105 for five painted a different picture. Useful contributions from Ross Ripley, Alan Sedgley and Ron Davies kept the score kicking along. Thoughtful batting from Chris James took the score to 158 for eight at the close. Trevone's openers Roberts and Morris began well. Morris hit the ball hard to square leg and looked threatening. The miserly Phil O'Connell brought matters under control, bowling an immaculate length so that his 12 overs cost only 11 runs. Debutant Rob Angell took a while to find his line, but moved the ball enough to secure two wickets. With four sixes to his name, Morris threatened to win the game himself, but another strong leg side hit was plucked out of the air by Heffernan and this proved to be the crucial wicket. Thirteen-year-old Ross Davies then came into his element, confusing all of the remaining batsmen with his leg spin. McPherson made a smart stumping, catches were taken, the stumps were hit and batsmen were left looking confused. Five wickets for 39 in 10 overs was an impressive return from a very promising young cricketer. Trevone kept up the fight, however, and there was considerable excitement. A smart catch by Steve Hitchens brought the match to a close, with Menheniot victors by 20 runs in the 44th over. This was a much better all-round team display by Menheniot and there is the promise of improvement to come. Menheniot (18 points) beat Trevone (7) by 20 runs. q q q Liskeard v Tregony AN unbeaten half century by Tim Hyslop helped Liskeard to victory over Tregony. Having been asked to bat first, the Bray brothers got Tregony away to a steady start before both succumbed to the trickery of Joel Westlake. The score then progressed to 78 for two before top scorer P Biddick was well held on the deep mid- wicket boundary by Rob Kettles off the occasional bowling of Andy Pearce. The Tregony innings then went into freefall, with three wickets falling in successive balls as Matt Hyslop claimed three for 17 and Tom Clack two for 22 to leave them wobbling at 106 for nine. The last wicket pair managed an unbroken stand of 19 to take the total to 125 for nine after 48 overs, whilst Richard King's 11-over stint went for a meagre 12 runs. In reply, openers Tim Hyslop and Pearce added 44 before Pearce was bowled for 22. Graham Peters and Kettles came and went cheaply and it was left to Hyslop and Westlake to compile an unbroken stand of 60, with Hyslop undefeated on 52 at the close. q q q Callington v Tintagel CALLINGTON were desperate for a win that would remove them from the bottom of the table. After some shaky bowling, David Emmerson ousted Harrison. Roach and Boxall pushed the innings along and Boxall did this with force, striking the ball to the boundary five times, including a six. When Jefferis returned for his second spell, he had an immediate effect, taking the wicket of the dangerous Boxall. But things got better in his last over, as he took two wickets in two balls, but the hat-trick eluded him in the form of a full toss, leaving him with figures of four for 50. Hunn chipped in with a wicket, as did Emmerson, who took two in the 47th over to bowl Tintagel out for 190. His final figures were three for 22. Callington set about the total with immediate effect, with Darren Hunn smashing two sixes, but he fell to Smith and once again the middle order collapsed. Weldon played superbly, making 36, with a solid defence and occasional attacking shot, and was well supported by Olver (39), but it was not enough and a sliced four from the returning George Greaves finished the game, leaving Callington 22 runs short. q q q Torpoint v St Stephen Top-of the-table Torpoint came away from this fixture with another excellent win. Put into bat first, a superb opening stand of 116 between Stu Adams (59) and Peter Dawe (43) paved the way before both went in quick succession. This brought Tony Freestone and Owen Davies together and these put on a further 66 before Davies went for 18. Darren Full soon followed for one before Freestone was bowled after scoring 35. Wickets then tumbled at regular intervals, with Torpoint finishing the innings on 203 for seven. St Stephen came in after tea and lost the dangerous Tim Hooper off the first ball of the innings, caught by Davies off the bowling of Full. Grigg and Spry soon followed, leaving St Stephens on 31 for three. Steve Grose came in and, together with opener Stan Job, produced a fine stand of 71 before Job was bowled by the in-form Jonathan Dawe. Runs then became hard to get and, with wickets falling regularly, the innings ended with St Stephen on 137 for nine, leaving Torpoint with a 66-run victory. Dawe finished with figures of four for 28. Torpoint travel to second-in-the-table Tintagel tomorrow in what could be an exciting game. l A COMBINATION of the weather and player unavailability saw all three rearranged npower Village Cup third-round ties conceded.
