Rame Head coastwatch station is holding an open day to mark the 25th anniversary of The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI).
The Institution was born in 1994 after two fishermen perished in full view of the recently abandoned coastguard lookout at Bass Point on the Lizard with no-one to witness their plight.
The charity now facilitates an ‘Eyes along the Coast’ service, providing a visual lookout from over 50 stations, manned by watch keepers from a multitude of backgrounds, on an entirely voluntary basis.
Rame Head station was the eleventh to join the network and was opened in 1998.
To mark the anniversary of the NCI, the watch keepers at Rame Head are holding an open day on Sunday September 1 between 10am and 4pm
Station Manager, Colin Scott, and the watch keepers at Rame Head, will show visitors what they do, and answer any questions, while still maintaining their 365 days a year watch over the area. Bacon baps and cakes will be available to purchase on site.
They will also be having a display in the Rame Community shop from September 7 to 14 and a stall at the Torpoint Street Fayre in September.
Polruan Station Manager’s wife, Anne Langley, will be doing her bit to spread the word starting an epic cycle ride around all the NCI stations in Cornwall on September 1.
