CLUBS and groups are faced with finding new meeting rooms after a town council decided to use the rooms as offices. The Guildhall rooms at Liskeard Public Hall are to be leased to a firm of architects for five years after the council became concerned with the amount of money made by the property. Now the four organisations who use the hall – Ki Akido, Liskeard Judo Club, Liskeard Line Dancers and Pride in Pets puppy training class – have until Christmas to find somewhere else to meet. Liskeard Judo Club's coach said the decision was a 'shock' for the group, which has used the hall for the past 25 years. 'This is a disaster for the judo club – I was absolutely gutted when I found out,' club instructor Steven Alexander said. 'Because we have been in the hall for such a long time it has been a shock, and we're not a club that makes money from the evening. Financial 'I don't get paid for what I do, all the club provides me with is a first aid certificate.' The search has now begun to find a place for the club to move. The club, which currently has around 15 members, had in the past looked at moving to the town's Lux Park Leisure Centre or Liskeard School but could not afford the fees. Part of the requirement is that space is needed for the judo mats which the members practise on. The money gained by the council through the move will be spent on the upkeep of the Public Hall. Mayor of Liskeard Chris Ferguson said the decision made sense for both financial and practical reasons. 'The guildhall will receive more use than it has done in the last few years,' he said. 'In addition ratepayers are going to gain more money per year that they would not have got before. 'We're doing our very best to help relocate the clubs in other venues in Liskeard.'
