THERE was a large attendance for the opening night of the 47th annual exhibition and sale of art and craft for Cancer Research UK, at Liskeard Public Hall on Tuesday night.
Last year the event raised £11,000 and the local organising committee are hoping that the total will be even more this year. All the exhibitors contribute at least 30 per cent of their sales to the charity, some give 100 per cent. Since its inception the show has raised £800,000.
The show was opened by Daphne Skinnard of BBC Radio Cornwall, who is from Pillaton and is the Cornwall Patron for Cancer Research UK. She said: 'This event is a tremendous fundraiser which at the same time shows so much rich talent. There is something here for everyone.'
This year's show also marks the end of an era as chairman of 14 years Jean Hoskin has decided to step down, though she will remain active on the committee.
Sam Williams, South West Regional Manager for Cancer Research UK, thanked Jean for her wonderful service to the charity and presented her with a bouquet and a framed Certificate of Appreciation for Oustanding Dedication and Support.'
There are 681 exhibits at the show which is open today (Friday March 6) and tomorrow from 10am-7.30pm and on Sunday from 10am-3.30pm.
The Liskeard and Looe Ladies Circle will be supporting the event by cooking up a Big Breakfast for Cancer Research UK, Liskeard, on Sunday in the Refreshment Room between 11am-2pm.
