County Division One Camborne v Callington CALLINGTON faced their sternest test to date with a visit to the divisional leaders and came away with a fine victory, to move into second place in the County One table. After winning the toss, Callington captain Jim Shorten decided to bat first, and his openers made a steady start. Reece Curwen will consider himself a little unlucky after falling to a spectacular diving catch at extra cover by Martin Jenkin. County player Dan Davis was looking in fine form and he and Jon Parsons took the new electronic scoreboard up to 48 when Jenkin snapped up another catch, this time off his own bowling, to dismiss Parsons for 22. Andrew Snowdon was deputising for Pete Tancock, who was attending a wedding, and he looked like his old self as he stroked the ball around the large Roskear field. Davis was homing in on his half century when umpire Polkinghorne's finger was raised to adjudge him lbw to Scott Harris for 44. Callington then suffered a mini middle-order crisis, losing three quick wickets to Paul Berryman and Craig Johnson to leave them on 137 for six after 38 overs. Snowdon was eventually out in the 41st over for an excellent 41, and Jim Shorten made 14 as Callington reached 173 for nine at the close, and tea was taken with a hint of disappointment. Daniel Stephens was the pick of the home bowlers with three for 24. Callington's bowlers set about the Camborne batsmen with fury and proved once again that they are as good a bowling outfit as there is in the division. Luke Davis and Jim Shorten bombarded the Camborne top order with pace and accuracy, and after 18 overs they had broken the back of the Camborne reply with the score on 26 for five. By this time, Sri Lankan spinner Sanjaya Rajapakse was causing his usual problems and Shorten was juggling his bowlers at the other end, to keep the batsmen on their toes. Rajapakse took three wickets for 33 runs from his 12 overs and Camborne were almost out of the running, despite a fine 49 from Stephens. However, a late flurry from Harris with an unbeaten 44 nearly gave the home supporters hope, but it was too late and Callington ran out winners by 19 runs. Shorten took three for 26 and Luke Davis two for 35. Callington (18 points) beat Camborne (7) by 19 runs q q q Division One Hayle v Luckett LUCKETT made the long journey to Hayle with four of their regular players missing, and they paid the penalty with a 62-run defeat. Batting first, Hayle made a poor start, with three wickets down with only 49 on the board, but then a stand of 83 for the fourth between K Jenkin and P Lello put them well in control of the game, before Jenkin was well caught and bowled by Ian Clements. Lello's wicket fell soon after when he was run out for 81. Hayle then lost wickets at regular intervals, but not before M Smitheram had scored 53, and they reached 241. John Schuttkacker took two for 45 and young Richard Brown four for 32 from 10.4 overs, with Andy Brenton claiming one for 36 and Clements two for 38. In reply, Luckett had eight batsmen getting into double figures as they tried to gain as many batting points as possible. They were able to pick up four as they made 179 for eight, with Martin Budge top- scoring with 38 and Brown adding 31. Lello took four for 25. Tomorrow, Gorran visit Luckett with both sides at full strength.
