Royal Navy Weapons Engineering Artificer Grace Porter, from Torpoint, has completed the first phase of her Royal Navy training, and collected a top prize on behalf of her class. The 17-year-old joined HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy's premier training establishment in Cornwall, this autumn for eight weeks of intensive training to turn her from a civvy into a sailor. Over the eight weeks she has learnt the basic skills required by every sailor including seamanship, fire-fighting, weapons training and most importantly how to work as part of a team. Grace was presented with the Ganges Trophy at her 'Passing in Parade', which is awarded weekly to the class who achieve the best overall marks during training. In joining the Royal Navy, Grace is following in the footsteps of both her Father, Warrant Officer Hugh Porter, currently serving in Faslane, Scotland and her stepfather, Lieutenant Commander Chris Harwood, currently serving on board HMS Argyll. Before joining Grace was a student, who was attracted to the Service by the lifestyle and through her family links. The former pupil of Looe Community School will now move on to HMS Collingwood in Portsmouth to undergo her specialist training to prepare her for a challenging and varied career in the Royal Navy Details of career opportunities within the Royal Navy are available online at http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk">www.royalnavy.mod.uk or by calling the recruitment line on 08456 07 55 55.
