St Cleer slipped to their first league defeat since February on a very hot and humid day out in the sunshine.
The 20 minute opening spell saw a fairly even encounter with both sides jockeying for position. Both went close with good reaction saves being made by both keepers. A long ball out of defence saw Gerrans take the ball to the goal line and a cut back knocked home by the incoming forward.
The speed of the Gerran forwards, plus playing on a pitch of maximum length and width caused the problems all afternoon. However, the St Cleer defence did well to contain. Roberts in the Saints goal did well to stop Gerrens taking a two goal advantage, with an excellent save high to his left.
Ten minutes later St Cleer were level, when a well timed pass through the heart of the home defence, saw Taylor run through to beat the advancing keeper for his first of the season. With half time approaching and both teams looking forward to a well deserved rest, a comer from the right saw Gerrens head goalward, and despite five defenders on the line, the referee gave a goal. although to the visitors and those on the touch line it was difficult to see how he came to that decision.
Saints started the second half with a much more positive attitude, and immediately applied pressure to the home goal. Again they found a goalkeeper in fine form and he denied them the equaliser. However, from a Gerrens clearance, a mistake in the visitors defence, gave the home side an easy chance which they gratefully accepted to give them a 3-i unexpected lead. From then on it was always Saints playing catch-up, and although they applied prolonged pressure, it was Gerrens who scored a fine fourth from a breakaway finishedv off in great style.
Despite their predicament Saints refused to give up, and continued to pressurise the home defence. To anyone coming late to the game, the impression would have been that the scoreline was the other way around. With ten minutes to go a freekick on the edge of the box taken by Collins caught everyone by surprise when a short pass to Shepherd saw him hit the cross bar. Langdon netted the rebound.
Saints continued to press but time just was not on their side, and so three points were dropped in a league match for the first time in a long time.
