Pensilva suffered a narrow defeat at St. Teath on Saturday thanks to a freak goal.

Conditions were difficult with a strong wind blowing almost directly down the pitch. The first half saw Pensilva with this wind at their backs looking to take advantage. The St. Teath defence were playing well but with Jonathan Firth out wide causing problems, two or three chances were made but unfortunately squandered. The sides went in at half time with the game still goalless.

Pensilva came out for the second half expecting heavy pressure and they were not disappointed as the home team went for that opening goal, and were denied by the post on one occasion. The goal they did get however, owed as much to luck as skill. After a corner was awarded, the ball was swung into the box before the strength of the wind saw it bend viciously into the top corner of the net.

More pressure followed without any goals while Pensilva occasionally threatened on the break at the other end. The game became very physical in the second half and almost boiled over on a couple of occasions as the referee showed a great deal of leniency after some poor challenges from players of both sides. There was bad feeling on the sidelines as well as Pensilva boss Mike Swinburne was subjected to some verbal abuse from the home fans, which culminated with the ball being hurled straight at the back of his head.

This win puts St. Teath top of the table while finishing any hopes Pensilva had of promotion.
