Serious training has begun for many South East Cornwall residents who are gearing up to taking part in the London Marathon this spring - the vast majority of them due to tackle the 26 odd miles for charity.

Among them is the customer manager at Liskeard's Safeway, John Bell. He will be running for Marie Curie cancer care and the Primrose appeal for breast cancer. These causes were chosen by John after his mother developed breast cancer last December.

John, who has never attempted a marathon before, started running two years ago, after moving to Cornwall from Bournemouth. He is hoping for a time of four and a half hours. A married man with three children, his aim is to raise £2,500 in sponsorship. Anyone wishing to support him can contact him at Safeways.

The Cornish Times would like to hear details of other South East Cornwall runners who are due to tackle the event.
