I was very upset to read in our parish magazine that our mobile library is planning to pay evening visits to Lerryn and Polruan.
The new evening service is supposed to cater for the elderly and housebound. This to me sounds very silly. With winter approaching, bringing cold weather and rain, what elderly person would want to go out after dark to change a library book. Housebound people cannot go out anyway.
Young mothers with little children bathed and ready for bed will not be able to use the van either.
I think this silly idea is a cunning plan. The number of people borrowing books will fall dramatically and of course our service will be stopped. We must protest now or it will be too late. Not everyone has a car, or even a bus service to go to a library each week.
We will all be losers.
