Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service have warned about fires in the open breaking out during the hot spell.

In the last week crews have tackled nine fires involving hedges, gorse and heathland across Cornwall, many of which were started accidentally.

During heatwaves, wild fires can take hold very quickly with destructive effects, explained Kathryn Billing from the service.

She said: ‘During periods of high temperatures, the land becomes dry and it only needs a small spark from a discarded cigarette, a hot used barbecue and even a glass bottle left out in the sun.

‘These fires can often be difficult to put out as they can spread quickly, over vast areas as recently seen in Manchester.’
