Police say they will prosecute the offender responsible for a series of acts of vandalism on scheduled ancient monuments at Rame Head.
The medieval chapel, Second World War gun and searchlight emplacements and other structures as well as the whole headland itself are part of the Mount Edgecumbe Country Park, and form an area of historic importance registered as an ancient monument with Historic England.
Park manager David Marshall said that graffiti had appeared on the base of a Second World War structure as well as all over the fence at the car park at Rame Head.
’Whoever it was had also spray painted blue some of the exposed rocks as you walk up to the chapel,’ said Mr Marshall.
’The police are now looking into whether this is part of vandalism carried out by a serial offender.’
Police have issued a photo of the tag and an appeal to anyone who recognises it and might know who is responsible to come forward.
A spokesperson for the force said: ’Heritage Crime is taken seriously by Devon and Cornwall Police and we’ll pursue offenders who target or indiscriminately damage our historic landscape.’
Mount Edgcumbe manager David Marshall continued: ’The vandalism reported on 19 April is not just a crime under Section 1 of the Criminal Damage Act – it is also a crime against a heritage asset.’
The country park is in the process of applying to Historic England for the necessary permission to carry out remedial work to remove the paint, a job which has to be carried out with extreme care and using specific agents so as not to leave behind ’ghosting’ of the marks left.
