A POSTMASTER at a village store in Crantock says he has been left ‘scarred’ after an alleged shoplifter reportedly threw a can of drink in his face.

Rikki Brandham, who runs Crantock Village Stores, says he received a gash above his eyebrow after challenging a young teenager over the alleged theft of the can on Monday, September 28, shortly before 4pm.

The shop manager has spoken out following concerns Devon and Cornwall Police are not treating the incident seriously.

Mr Brandham said: “I ran after the shoplifter and as I went towards him, he threw the can in my face, which left me with a massive cut and scarring.

“Someone else managed to grab him and he was taken inside the shop.

“The police turned up and took him home. I was told he is not going to get charged and that the incident is not going to go to trial. The officer said the police should give me a call in four weeks time to make a statement. Other than that, the police have done nothing.

“I’ve had no support. I’m a bit worried by what has happened. The staff are women who are aged 60 plus and don’t want to be in the shop on their own.”

However, Devon and Cornwall Police state they are investigating the incident.

A spokesperson said: “Police were called following a report of a shop theft in Crantock Village, near Newquay.

“Officers attended the scene and spoke with the victim and other parties involved to establish the circumstances of the incident.

“A suspect was identified and remains under investigation and is due to be interviewed on completion of enquiries. The victim sustained a cut above his eyebrow and was left in the care of the ambulance service. The investigation is currently ongoing.”
