A HUGE landslide has damaged steps and a bridge that give access to a beach in Whitsand Bay.

RNLI lifeguards are urging people not to go into the water at Sharrow Beach as there is no lifeguard patrol on the beach at present, although an observation service will be provided from the hut on the cliffside. The coastal path in this area is managed by the National Trust.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: ’Yesterday (Thursday 27 August) there was a landslide and flooding at Sharrow, Whitsand Bay, following the heavy rain.

’The steps and bridge down to the beach have been severely damaged so there is no access to the beach. RNLI lifeguards will provide an observation service from the beach lifeguard unit on the cliff, so that they can alert the Coastguard in an emergency. This will not be a full, flagged service. Please do not enter the water at Sharrow. The nearest lifeguarded beaches (patrolled 10am-6pm) are at Tregantle and Tregonhawke.’
