NOT for many a year has the annual finals day of the East Cornwall Bowls League been staged in such excellent weather as greeted a huge attendance at the West Looe green for this season's finale.

The pristine condition of the Hannafore playing surface was matched only by some sumptuous refreshments which were enjoyed by the visiting players while basking in the sunshine and taking in the panoramic views of Looe Bay and the nearby St George's Island.

And while all those factors certainly combined for a salubrious occasion then the sport, too, didn't disappoint with the final of The Cornish Times singles being one of the closest for many years.

The 'Match of the Day' produced a number of nail-biting moments until Callington's Paul Smith just

got the better of Bodmin's Mike Nightingale, winning by four shots, 23-19, in front of an appreciative audience who ringed the green.
