CAMBORNE head to winless Cambridge tomorrow (3pm) looking to cement their superb start to their debut season in National League One.

Four wins from five – the only defeat being to a Plymouth Albion side that have yet to drop a point this term – has ensured the Cherry and Whites are fourth going into tomorrow’s trip to Cambridgeshire to face a side who will look to come out firing following their 102-0 hammering at Albion last weekend.

Cambridge were relegated from the Championship last term, and in their first four outings accrued seven points which goes to show they are usually highly-competitive.

However, they will be desperate to respond in front of their supporters as Camborne head to Grantchester Road for the first time in their history.

Declan Prowse makes a first start of the season at loosehead-prop as Tommy-Lee Southworth drops to the bench, and he will be joined by skipper Sam Matavesi who moves from flanker to hooker to replace try-scoring machine Ben Priddey who is unavailable.

Giant lock George Smith’s registration has finally gone through and he comes straight in for Priddey which allows Adam Hughes and Jago Sheppard to line up as the flankers either side of No.8 Herbie Stupple.

Flanker Jordan Nicholls and centre Joel Matavesi are both fit to return to the squad following injury and are on a bench which also sees a recall for scrum-half CJ Boyce.

Meanwhile, winger Alex Ducker could be in contention for next week’s home clash with Sale FC, as will prop Jack Andrew who has just one game remaining of his six-match ban after being cited playing for Cornwall back in May.

Head coach Tom Kessell said: “We’re really enjoying the chance to be in this league and we played really well last week.

“(London) Scottish came down last week and provided us with a real test having come down last season, and we’re expecting the same this week at Cambridge.

“Yes they were hammered last weekend, but they picked up seven points before that and lost most of their games by just a score, so they’re certainly going to be competitive, particularly at home. We know that they’re going to be desperate to respond and they’ve got some very good players who’ll be hurting, so they’re going to be coming after us and we’ve got to stand up to that.

“We certainly won’t be taking them lightly, but we also need to keep focusing on us and what we do.”

Kessell also explained some of the selections.

He said: “Dec (Prowse) has an opportunity tomorrow to show what he’s about having been on the bench so far, but it’s a great opportunity for him, as it is for George Smith.

“We’ve been trying to get him on the pitch for the last three weeks which has been a bit frustrating, but we’re excited to see what he can do. We’re a team that cares about each other and we enjoy what we do which will hopefully bring the best out of him, but equally he is a high-calibre player who’ll bring plenty to us.”

Kessell is also able to welcome back Nicholls and Joel Matavesi, which has led to some tough calls.

He continued: “Having those two back goes to shows the strength in-depth we’ve now got. I’ve been here before when we’re ringing people up struggling to get a bench, so it goes to show how far the club has come and they are decisions as a coaching team you’d rather have to make than the opposite problem.”

Any supporters unable to go to Cambridge can watch senior action at the Recreation Ground on Saturday as the seconds welcome Newton Abbot (2.30pm) in Counties One Western West.
