Liskeard rugby player Merryn Doidge is hoping to win her second full cap for England’s Under 20 Women on Saturday.

The 18-year-old, who lives in Darite, is awaiting the announcement of the squad for the match against France at Newbury RFC (2.30pm kick-off).

This comes only a week after her first start for the Under 20 side, when England lost 31-12 to France at the Stade de Hautepierre in Strasbourg, in the opener of the two-game series.

The former Liskeard School and Community College student said: ‘I started and played a full 80 minutes on the wing.

‘It was a very tough game which put our team under a massive challenge.

‘The result didn’t go our way, but we pulled it back and put some points on the board in the second half.

‘I am looking forward to improving our game at the training camp ready for the return fixture this weekend.

‘I hope to be selected, but either way the experience was unforgettable, the biggest game I’ve played in with a great supporting crowd.’

Merryn, who started playing rugby with Liskeard-Looe RFC and Newquay, now represents Bristol Bears and Exeter College, where she is studying.

The England Under 20 Women’s squad includes two other Cornish players – Ebony Jefferies (St Ives) and Charlie Budge (Redruth).
