ST AUSTELL head coach Sam Parsons feels there has been a ‘different feel altogether’ this week as they welcome promoted Weston-super-Mare to Tregorrick Park tomorrow afternoon in Regional One South West (3pm).

The Saints head into the contest with just one to win their name – an opening day success over Chew Valley – and since then have been well beaten at Royal Wootton Bassett before narrow home reversals to Launceston and Sidmouth.

Parsons admitted it’s been a challenging couple of weeks despite okay performances.

On last Saturday, he said: “Very frustrated about sums it up. Again we were hugely dominant in terms of field position and possession, but just couldn’t convert.

“We have had a good look at the game as a group and have recognised where we need to improve to get results. We are not far off and it’s bearing resemblance of last year’s start to the season. We can take huge positives out of what we are doing if our mentality is right and not look at the negatives. It’s boiling down to individual skill errors, which means its an easy fix.”

He continued: “We had some really strong performances from Adam Powell and Connor Wild, Rory jago added real physicality and a bit of grunt, but our standout was Dan Tyrrell.

“He was so busy and so often was giving us front foot ball off the back of countless runs, half breaks and line breaks. His work-rate is unreal and adding AJ King into the mix who was superb on both sides of the ball on debut, is setting us up for a really exciting back line.”

Parsons knows though that although bonus points keep them ticking over, it is the four or five-pointers that really matter.

He said: “Looking ahead to Weston, it’s now time to put our heads down and focus on us, how we execute and how we get our minds ready to compete for everything.

“We are a side that functions better off the back of hard graft, so it’s now about how we can prepare and be ready come kick-off on Saturday. We are starting to settle as a squad and the more we train and play together the more the combinations of old and new players can grow and start to connect.

We have prepared well, there has been some honest chats this week and a different feel altogether, so bring it on!”

Parsons and his coaching staff have made two changes to the starting line-up.

Matt Boothby is working with youngster Dan Bennett getting a recall at loosehead-prop, while influential inside-centre Jamie Stanlake is available again and comes straight in for one of last week’s try-scorers, George Tregilgas.

There is also an old face returning on the bench in fly-half Will Tanswell who has rejoined the Saints on loan from Camborne.

The head coach concluded: “It’s great to have Will back after a hugely-successful stint with us two years ago, and he will go straight onto the bench.”
