ST AUSTELL head coach Sam Parsons admits their discipline so far has been ‘incredibly disappointing’ as they look to bounce back from last Saturday’s Cornish derby defeat to Launceston when they host Sidmouth tomorrow (3pm) in Regional One South West.
The Saints saw lock Tom Daniel red-carded midway through the first half of last weekend’s clash, but despite rallying to lead 15-5 at the break, a controversial late try from Sheldon Higgins saw the visitors escape Tregorrick Park with a 31-25 success.
Parsons admitted there were positives to take, but they aren’t helping themselves.
He continued: “It’s mixed emotions really. I was delighted with the character we showed and the desire to keep playing rugby even with a man down. Then to opt for a scrum after losing another to a yellow and score off the back of it shows great self-belief and then quality to execute. However, discipline is costing us at the moment and while we have been competitive in every game we have played, we have not completed a fixture with the full complement which is incredibly disappointing.
“Fair play to Launceston for keeping their composure as it can be easy to chase a win when you’re a man up.”
St Austell started with a narrow victory over Chew Valley before being well beaten 54-29 at Royal Wootton Bassett 13 days ago, and Parsons wants a response.
He continued: “We have to regroup now and move on to prepare for another big test Saturday. We know how punchy Sidmouth are and will be a very different test to what we have faced so far. We’re looking forward to getting back out there as it always seems a long wait after a tough defeat, so both coaches and players are ready to go.”
Parsons once again is forced into changes for various reasons. Full-back Archie Bees, one of the try scorers last weekend, has gone back to Australia, and with key inside-centre Jamie Stanlake also missing, it has meant a switch around.
Max Bullen reverts to full-back with Dan Tyrrell, who started 13 seven days ago, back in his favoured position on the left-wing.
George Tregilgas makes a first start of the season at inside-centre, and there is another new face alongside him in midfield in AJ King who has arrived on loan from National League One side Camborne.
Up front, prop Charlie Nicholson is preferred to Dan Bennett which allows Matt Boothby to switch over to the loosehead side, while Daniel’s red card sees flanker Rory Jago come in from the start as Adam Powell partners skipper Mark Vian in the second row.
Flanker Hector Bright is named on the bench following a nasty cut at Royal Wootton Bassett which ruled him out of last weekend, and is joined by props Dan Bennett and Scott Pearce plus Aussie Sam Stokes and Parsons himself.
