CAMBORNE have made another addition to their squad for their inaugural National League One campaign by signing county star Matt Shepherd from Cornish rivals St Austell.

The veteran back, 36, can play anywhere from nine to 15 and brings plenty of higher league experience having previously played for Plymouth Albion, Launceston and Redruth before returning to hometown St Austell where he was head coach and latterly backs coach.

On the move, Shepherd said: “I’m delighted to be joining Camborne this year for our maiden season in National One, what an amazing time to be part of a club that is going places.

“After training for the last two weeks, what Ricky (Pellow - sporting director) and the team have put together is nothing short of amazing.

“To have this opportunity to play National League again is something that I’m going to cherish as you never know how long these playing years will last. But, as I said, it’s an absolute pleasure to be joining for the next year, and fingers crossed we put our best foot forward and show the league exactly what we’ve got.”

Head coach Tom Kessell admitted Shepherd could be a key acquistion.

He said: “I’ve known Matt for a long period of time. He’s always wanted to try and push himself and see how high he can go. I think he’s going to push himself in an environment that’s quite demanding at the moment, but he’s going to be a big part of that.

“It’s all credit to him for putting himself out there and giving it a go. With his experience, age, determination and ability as a player, he’s definitely going to add to our squad as well. His versatility is his biggest asset, although it’d be great if he can nail down one position, but he can cover various positions which is always important.”
