Camborne continue fine away form in the capital at Rosslyn Park

CAMBORNE recorded another stunning comeback National One win on the road on Saturday with a superb team performance in London at Rosslyn Park.

‘Town’ gave a debut to centre Ben Power who showed up well in attack and defence, whilst upfront the whole forward pack took the game to the big home forwards throughout.

Camborne made four changes from the side beaten by Plymouth Albion on matchday two as Power was joined in the starting XV by fit-again fly-half Fraser Honey, lock Jago Sheppard and winger Harry Larkins as Joel Matavesi (injured), Will Hennessy, Jamie Prisk (injured) and Oli Roberts (injured) made way.

After a scoreless and scrappy opening quarter, an interception try against the run of play sparked a quickfire Rosslyn Park try spree that saw the visitors fall 21-0 behind inside the half hour with Luke Mehson crossing twice either side of an Ewan Fenley effort just after Josh Matavesi was sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle.

Responding with purpose, Camborne opened their account on 33 minutes when the forwards drove from a close-range line-out for hooker Ben Priddey to dot down. Honey added the extras.

As the interval neared, Matavesi, back on the field by now, broke the cover before feeding on to flanker Jordan Nicholls who took play deep into Park territory. The ball was swiftly recycled to left-wing Alex Ducker who raced over unopposed. Fly-half Honey’s conversion made it 21-14 at the break.

With all to play for, the second period began with a lengthy injury stoppage for a home player. When the game resumed, the Cherry & Whites promptly levelled matters on 52 minutes with Herbie Stupple – on for the injured Nicholls – barging over from close-range for Honey to convert.

In what was to be an isolated attack, Rosslyn Park briefly restored their lead with an unconverted bonus point try on 55 minutes from Fred Davies, but from then on the visitors took charge.

Relentless forward pressure saw Priddey complete his brace improved by Honey for a 28-26 lead, before a carbon copy ‘catch and drive’ gave the prolific try-scoring hooker his hat-trick and his team a seven-point advantage.

In the closing stages ‘Town’ managed the game well, forcing the home side to try to attack from deep with relentless tackling and harrying.

Late on the visitors turned over ball and impressive full-back Frankie Nowell streaked away down the left flank before sidestepping the last defender to touchdown. Again Honey landed the conversion to wrap up a memorable victory to back up their opening day success at Leeds Tykes a fortnight earlier.
