NATIONAL LEAGUE ONE
Cambridge 26 Camborne 59
CAMBORNE maintained their 100% away record In National One with an excellent nine-try victory at bottom side Cambridge.
For the Cherry and Whites, giant lock George Smith made a belated debut and he responded well with an imperious display at the line-out.
On a blustery afternoon, ‘Town’ were first on the scoresheet early on when Matt Shepherd’s pass released flanker Jago Sheppard who broke a tackle before galloping clear to touchdown.
Though Cambridge then edged in front at 7-5, the visitors responded midway through the half when skipperSam Matavesi dotted down from a ‘catch and drive’ for Fraser Honey to convert.
On 27 minutes Camborne went further ahead with a superb try as a Josh Matavesi offload created space for midfield partner Ben Power to slice through the defence and go in under the posts. Fly-half Honey knocked over the regulation conversion for 19-7.
Before half-time the hosts cut the deficit with an unconverted effort, and soon after the resumption their third try, this time improved from the touchline, put them briefly level.
From this point the Cherry & Whites went up a gear, crossing in the 45th minute to begin a devastating purple patch that would see them bag 33 unanswered points in under 20 minutes.
Hooker Matavesi completed his brace after Frankie Nowell was held close in with Honey curling in the extras with a well judged kick. Minutes later the skipper made it a hat-trick as he followed up No.8 Herbie Stupple’s charge to barge over with Honey again landing the conversion.
Replacement centre Joel Matavesi was next to romp over from brother Josh’s pass, and on the hour the visitors went out of sight as left wing Nowell raced clear to dot down with Honey converting both scores.
On 63 minutes the shell-shocked home side were powerless to prevent right-wing Shepherd flying in at the corner flag to bring up the visiting half century.
In the closing stages, centre Power exchanged passes with outstanding full-back Oli Roberts to go over for the ninth ‘Town’ try, which was again improved by Honey, before Cambridge gained some consolation with a bonus point score with the final play of the game.
