CAMBORNE head coach Tom Kessell wants his side to ‘impose themselves’ as they prepare for the biggest home league game in the club’s long history tomorrow when they host Plymouth Albion (3pm).

The Cherry and Whites stormed to the National League Two (West) crown last term and started life in the third-tier for the first time with a remarkable 38-36 comeback win at Leeds Tykes having trailed 29-14 at half-time.

Tries from Ben Priddey (2), Josh Matavesi, Jamie Prisk and Alex Ducker plus conversions from Fraser Honey and Rory O’Kane kept them in the contest, before full-back O’Kane’s late 40-metre penalty ensured a perfect five points from their longest away trip of the season.

Kessell admitted last weekend couldn’t have gone much better and feels the nature of the victory could be a springboard.

He said: “If you said to me before the game that we’d pick up five points, then of course I’d have taken it, but the way we did it was remarkable.

“Last weekend’s team was a mix of players who had played at a much higher level and some who were in their first game at this level, and in a way the game went a bit like that.

“We started well but then there was a big drop-off, but I think we underestimated the wind and the slope.

“Sam (Matavesi) asked the boys at half-time to go up another gear, I felt confident that we would and it was great to come out on the right side of the result.

“It showed the character of the team. We fought so hard to get into this league and although many teams might have folded being down at half-time and with the long journey, it showed we’ve got plenty of character about us as well as the result.”

With a crowd close to 3,000 expected tomorrow – boosted by several hundred Albion fans – it couldn’t be set up better.

The Devonians, who the Cherry and Whites last met in a competitive fixture in 1989, narrowly missed out on promotion last term and are aiming to return to the Championship as soon as possible – but with only one automatic slot available and the need to navigate a play-off if you finish second, they will need to be at it every week, although they demolished Rosslyn Park 61-17 in London last Saturday.

Camborne however have plenty of players missing for various reasons, and make four changes from last weekend, all of which are enforced.

In the pack, lock Jago Sheppard and No.8 Herbie Stupple are unavailable with Adam Hughes and Cornish Pirates loanee Barnaby Elderkin coming in, the latter for his debut at blindside-flanker with skipper Sam Matavesi reverting to the back of the scrum.

On the outside, fly-half Fraser Honey has failed to recover from a knock sustained in Yorkshire, and with O’Kane out with concussion, the versatile Will Hennessy takes the all-important 10 shirt.

O’Kane’s spot goes to former Albion man Frankie Nowell, with young winger Oli Roberts moving back to 15.

The bench has a similar look to it as last week as versatile back three player Harry Larkins comes in for Hennessy with props Declan Prowse and Ben Woodmansey named once more, as are flanker Harrison Hayman and back Jay Toogood.

Kessell anticipates a thrilling encounter at the Rec, saying: “From a club stance, Plymouth at home couldn’t be much better, particularly with the anticipation after winning last week.

“It’s going to be a big day for everybody and although we know it’s going to be tough, we’ve got to be excited. We’ve got to enjoy the occasion and not get too stuck up in the emotion of it. We deserve to be here so let’s go out and compete.

“We know they’re a good side who’ve been at this level a long time, so tomorrow will give us a good idea of where we’re at. They’re very forward dominated, as are lots of teams in this league, but we’ve got to try and impose on them and see how we react.

“Unfortunately both of our main 10s are out in Fraser and Rory, and Herbie and Jago are unavailable, but we’ve got a big squad full of good players. We can’t wait!”
