Ashes begin new season with defeat at Camborne

SALTASH’S start to the new 2026/27 season ended in defeat away to Camborne’s second string at the Recreation Ground.

Both sides were eager to get their delayed league campaigns off to a good start and on a good surface sporting decent grass, the home side kicked off, playing away from the clubhouse end.

The home side were on the board after seven minutes with a try under the sticks after some high tempo action, which they converted for a 7-0 lead. The Ashes were on the board after 18 minutes with a Jack Pritchard penalty goal.

The half time speech for the Ashes must have had some impact as from the restart, debut winger Henry Taylor went on a run from deep in his own half to link up with support on the 10m line and after some great interplay, put lock James Sutton under the sticks for a terrific try, converted by Pritchard as the Ashes took the lead 10-7.

Camborne hit back with a converted try of their own on 51 mins to retake the lead at 14-7, which they extended again after 66 mins.

The lead got even bigger with a pushover try two minutes later, and a well taken try from the base on 71 mins sealed the game and the points for the home side.

The Ashes will hope to bounce back at home to St Ives this Saturday (3pm),
