BIG is beautiful for sailing in Looe this week as the 'beamy' Merlin Rocket dinghies return for their National Championship Week. Fresh from their annual pilgrimage to Salcombe Week, the class is delighted to be back in the South East Cornwall resort for the first time since 2008 when Frensham Pond Sailing Club duo Roger Gilbert and James Stewart made the long trek from Surrey worthwhile by retaining their National crown. Six years ago heavy seas thwarted Race Officer Roger Hocking, but Gilbert and Stewart waited patiently before striking in their top-flight dinghy, Wild Card, prepared and fitted out by Mervin Driver of Beer, near Seaton in East Devon. For more on this story, and the week's other sports news, don't forget to order a regular copy of The Cornish Times, on sale every Friday.
