Plymouth Argyle will go into tomorrow’s eagerly-anticipated top of the table Sky Bet League Two clash at leaders Doncaster Rovers seeking to reignite the title race, writes Ross Reid.
Argyle’s boss Derek Adams is not looking over his shoulder after two wins and a draw.
Looking ahead at Sunday’s big game, the bullish Scot is looking up. ‘Three points allows us to get back in the title race,’ he said.
‘We have got everybody fit and are looking forward to going there.’
Rovers start the weekend six points ahead of their nearest title contenders and a massive 17 points clear of fourth-placed Stevenage, who beat third placed Portsmouth 3-0 last weekend.
With 38 games played and only eight more to go, both sides deserve massive credit for spending the season at the top. Donny have won 23 games, Argyle 22 out of 38.
Regardless of what happens on Sunday, the top two sides have been great value this season. Both deserve to be promoted and I don’t say that lightly. Such consistency under pressure is to be admired.
Talking of which, Argyle’s 1-0 win over Morecambe was crucial. Having won at Mansfield and drawn at Wycombe it was important the Greens followed up with a home win over 16th placed Morecambe.
Graham Carey’s exquisite 20-yard finish, his 13th goal of the season, was enough to see off the Shrimps.
Now the Greens are on a downward slide towards the end of the season. Blink and you may miss the best bits of their promotion run-in.
As Adams says: ‘I think every one of the eight games are going to be good games and there will be an atmosphere at all of them.’
Adams is doubtless referring to the ‘atmosphere’ created by Argyle’s amazing green army of supporters, who spent the last 10 minutes – including four minutes of stoppage time – relentlessly chanting their team to victory last Saturday.
