So little old Plymouth Argyle had the audacity to defend very well against Premier League giants Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, writes Kevin Marriott.

How dare the League Two side organise themselves supremely well to force a 0-0 draw and earn a money-spinning FA Cup third round replay at Home Park next Wednesday evening?

Well I’m sorry for some of Liverpool’s famous ex players, including Steve McManaman and Michael Owen, who didn’t enjoy the Pilgrims’ rearguard action.

BT?Sport’s co-commentator McManaman was critical and condescending. Owen, an ‘expert’, said at half-time: ‘The scoreline is the only positive Plymouth can take at the moment.’

But the scoreline was the only thing that mattered – and I thought Derek Adams got his tactics spot on.

Okay, Argyle could have been more attack-minded and then left gaps at the back which even a very young Liverpool side might have exploited.

But by drawing, the manager and the players have earned the club at least £500,000 from getting Liverpool down here next week for a tie the world and his wife want to see.

Every penny is crucial for a club at Argyle’s level. Indeed most clubs outside the Premier League are struggling financially.

Adams made no apologies for Argyle’s approach – and why should he?

I’m sure the vast majority of the magnificent 8,600 fans who outsang the famous Kop came away from the ground glowing with pride.

And after the level of support they gave their team, I hope everyone who made the long journey gets a ticket for the replay.

It wasn’t Argyle’s fault, either, that Jurgen Klopp decided to select such a youthful starting line-up. That was his, and Liverpool’s, choice. Either Klopp thought that team would be good enough to beat a League Two side, or Liverpool are not that interested in the FA Cup.

We shall see how interested they are when they troop out of the Home Park tunnel on Wednesday.

My suspicion is that they will include one or two more familiar faces.

I still expect the giants to make it through to a fourth round home tie against Wolves. But on a cold, wet, windy night in front of a capacity crowd at Home Park, who knows?
