Sidmouth Town 3 Newquay 3
Callam Mconie scored an injury time goal to rescue a point at Manstone Lane on Saturday – but manager Shaun Middleton felt it was two points dropped rather than one gained.
Sidmouth were holding on to a 3-2 lead as the game entered its fourth minute of stoppage time when Mconie struck his second goal of the match to delight the travelling Peppermints supporters.
The home side had been 2-0 up at half-time with goals from Lewis Hill (29 minutes) and Cholwe Hachipuka on his debut (39).
But they were reduced to 10 men six minutes into the second half when another debutant, Tom Badcott, was sent off and Newquay took advantage by wiping out the advantage with two goals in a minute midway through the half by Mconie and Jack Bray-Evans.
Ryan White’s 75th minute goal gave Sidmouth renewed hope on victory before Mconie’s late, late equaliser.
Newquay boss Middleton said: “It was an eventful game but we weren’t particularly good.
“In the first half we found ourselves two goals down with what were really poor goals to concede which isn’t great because we seem to be conceding the same sort of goals which is very frustrating.
“But at half-time we had a good chat and the boys got back into the game at 2-2 after changing our shape and there only looked to be one winner at that point.
“Unfortunately we conceded another very sloppy goal which was a repetition of how we’ve been conceding goals.
“But then we got an injury time equaliser and we had another chance after that with which we could’ve taken all three points.
“It definitely felt like two points dropped rather than a point gained as I felt we should have put it to bed in the second half.”
Newquay now have a week off and Middleton said: “We will have to knuckle down and get ready for a big run in September and October when I think we have 13 games, so two big months coming up.”
