SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST

Holsworthy 1 Callington Town 2

IN A GAME which very much mirrored their 2-1 victory over Wadebridge Town in their previous game, Callington Town managed to take all three points from a potentially difficult game over the Devon border.

On a superbly prepared playing surface, Callington started the brighter of the two sides without creating too many chances. Callum McDonnell came closest to scoring when his long range effort was tipped over by home keeper Ryan Chadwick. The home side also looked threatening when going forward with some good movement looking to unlock a visiting defence skippered by the returning Harry Southcott.

Callington suffered a blow in the 27th minute when key striker Fin Harrison was forced to limp off with an ankle injury, meaning a reshuffle of the formation.

The remainder of the first half remained goalless in a nip and tuck encounter.

Three minutes after half-time, Kieran Ryall was pulled down in the area, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Ryall himself took the spot-kick himself and slotted home to the Chadwick’s right with a well-struck penalty.

This was the boost Callington needed and led to some more free-flowing football as the Pastymen began to dominate the game. In the 75th minute a second goal followed. A good move saw McDonnell pull a ball back from the right hand side and Calum Courts, timing his run perfectly, was able to slot the ball home with a low shot.

Unsurprisingly, Holsworthy moved giant centre-half and skipper Jedd Peschke up front, and proceeded to bombard the Callington penalty area with long balls. In the 82nd minute, the Cally defence failed to clear a corner and the ball was hooked in by Peschke, leading to a nervous last few minutes as the home bombardment continued.

However, the Cally defence held firm to seal a fifth consecutive win and kickstart a busy run of fixtures in October.

Player of the match was Ed Harrison who gave a faultless performance having been forced to switch to centre-back following the injury to his brother Fin.

Cally, who now have seven wins from eight, are back in action on Wednesday night (October 7) when they host a Bude Town side who were unbeaten in six before their narrow defeat to visiting Falmouth Town Reserves on Saturday. Falmouth, coincidentally, are the only side to beat Town this term.

Elsewhere around the club on Saturday there was a superb win for the Development side as they saw off visiting Nanpean Rovers 3-1 in St Piran League Premier Division East.

Evan Barnes put the hosts in front three minutes before the break, and although Leo Best levelled for the Clay Country outfit just after the hour, Cally, who saw Sam Lambert put in a star showing, regrouped and won it.

A Billy Jonas penalty on 81 minutes put them back in front before the icing on the cake was delivered by Spencer Barrett in the fifth minute of injury-time.
