THE continued progress of the works to protect the Camel Viaduct for decades to come is dependent on the weather, Cormac has warned.
In the latest update on the extensive works to refurbish the viaduct, which was built in the early 1990s, the contractors have said that before they can progress with the waterproofing works, there might be some work required to repair and replace the concrete forming the bridge.
While weather might delay progress, the existing traffic lights will remain in place.
A spokesperson for Cormac said: “The team has continued removing the existing protective layers and waterproofing system from the bridge deck.
“This important preparatory work is allowing the underlying concrete structure to be fully exposed and assessed before the new waterproofing system is installed. The remaining footpath and old ducting have now also been removed through to the western abutment, marking another key milestone in the programme.
“Looking ahead, and subject to suitable weather conditions, we expect to complete the deck preparation activities during this week.
“Once this has been finished, specialist surveys will be undertaken to assess the depth of concrete cover over the bridge's reinforcement. Any necessary concrete repairs to the bridge deck and abutments will then be carried out before work begins to install the new waterproofing system.
“As we move into these next phases, progress will become increasingly dependent on the weather. Several of the planned activities require dry and calm conditions, so there may be occasions when work needs to pause to ensure the works are completed safely and to the required quality standards.
“Traffic management arrangements will remain unchanged, with two-way temporary traffic lights continuing to operate on the bridge.
“Thank you for to everyone for their continued patience and understanding while these essential maintenance works are carried out.”
