I AM writing in response to Mighal An Gov's comments in the Cornish Times (Letters, 24.11.06) about Plymouth dumping its waste in Cornwall. Let me point out that Plymouth has to put its rubbish somewhere. Cornwall has lots of space and Plymouth has very little. So what's the problem, Cornwall has two nice big tips, one at Lean Quarry, the other at Connon Bridge and will soon have a brand new incinerator in mid-Cornwall. Plymouth will be paying for this privilege to the private owners of Lean Quarry. As Imerys is reducing its capacity at St Austell soon there will be lots of space for landfill. We are all in this together. Plymouth is the major employer in this area and, basically, the capital of the area. We have to be realistic: soon Plymouth's tip will be closed and there are no plans for an incinerator. In fact, I'm sure the Plymothians would not allow one in the city. As a Devonian by birth, living in Cornwall and employed in Plymouth, surely if we had to have a regional assembly, it would be better to have a regional assembly based on Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall. Remember there are as many people living in the Plymouth area as the whole of Cornwall.
