LOCAL residents are being invited to lace up their walking boots and take part in one of Saltash’s oldest traditions when the town’s annual Beating the Bounds community walk returns this autumn.

The five-mile guided walk will take place on Saturday, October 3, giving participants the chance to follow the historic boundary of the ancient parish while learning about a custom that has been celebrated in the town for more than 150 years.

Walkers will meet at 10.30am at the bridleway next to Waitrose before setting off on the traditional route, which dates back to 1871.

Beating the Bounds was once an important annual event in communities across the country, with residents walking parish boundaries to pass on knowledge of where they lay and to pray for the protection and prosperity of the land.

This year’s walk will be led by Saltash Town Mayor, Cllr Brian Stoyel, who is encouraging residents of all ages to take part in the long-standing community tradition.

After completing the walk, participants will travel by train from St Germans back to Saltash, where they will be welcomed at Isambard House for a traditional cream tea to round off the day.

Places must be booked in advance, with tickets available from the Saltash Town Council Library Hub. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £1 for children under 13. Organisers have reminded participants the ticket price does not include the train fare from St Germans to Saltash.

Dogs are welcome to join the walk but must remain on leads throughout the event.

Organisers say the annual event offers a unique opportunity to discover Saltash’s rich history, enjoy a scenic autumn walk and celebrate one of the town’s oldest surviving traditions.
