TORPOINT Ferry users will continue to face a reduced service – with just two ferries operating instead of the usual three.

Tamar Crossings confirmed its two-ferry service will continue this week, with a ferry leaving from each side of the River Tamar approximately every 15 minutes.

The operator said it understood the reduced service could be frustrating, particularly for people who rely on the ferry every day and are already being affected by roadworks and diversions in the area.

However, it said the decision was necessary because of staffing levels and the specialist safety roles required to operate each vessel.

“The safe operation of each ferry requires a specific number of crew members in specifically trained safety critical roles,” Tamar Crossings said. “These roles cannot simply be covered by any member of staff.”

The operator explained that when a member of staff in one of those specialist positions is unexpectedly unavailable, there may no longer be enough suitably trained crew to safely operate another ferry.

Additional hours are being taken on by suitably trained members of staff where possible, but legal limits on working hours mean there is only a certain amount of extra cover available.

Tamar Crossings said it was therefore having to carefully balance staffing across the week and prioritise cover where it would provide the greatest benefit.

It stressed the decision was not taken lightly and was not simply a case of putting another member of staff on a ferry at short notice.

The operator said it would continue to review staffing levels and return to a three-ferry service as soon as enough safety-critical crew are available.

“Our crews are working hard to provide the safest and best service possible within the circumstances. We ask customers please treat them with patience and respect.”

Tamar Crossings thanked passengers for their understanding and said further updates would be provided when confirmed information becomes available.
