A FUNDRAISER set up in memory of a talented teenage sports star has already raised more than £12,000 following her death after a medical emergency at a Cornish cricket club.

Amélia Jones collapsed at Grampound Road Cricket Club on Thursday evening (August 17) and was taken to hospital, where she later died.

The fundraising appeal was set up by her uncle, Sean Jones, to help the family with funeral costs and ease some of the immediate financial pressure following her devastating death.

Amélia’s family described her as a deeply loved daughter, sister, friend and cherished twin to Charlotte. They said she had the “most beautiful smile” and brought huge happiness to everyone around her.

Sport was a major part of Amélia’s life and, just last week, she captained the Cornwall Girls Under-14s against Glamorgan. Her family said the achievement reflected her “talent, confidence and determination”.

Amélia was also exceptionally talented and academically gifted. She was studying Grade 8 piano and Grade 5 clarinet, while her school was supporting her academically by allowing her to take additional GCSEs within her timetable.

Her family has also made the decision to donate her organs, helping other families who are suffering.

They said her death had left an “unimaginable void” in the lives of everyone who knew and loved her.

Her parents, Victoria and Mike, are both self-employed, and Victoria will understandably need time away from work as the family comes to terms with their loss.

The GoFundMe fundraising appeal has been launched to help cover Amélia’s funeral expenses and support the family in the weeks and months ahead.

The appeal had raised more than £12,000 at the time of writing, with donations continuing to come in from people wanting to support Amélia’s family.

“Any donation, no matter how small, would mean an enormous amount and will go directly towards supporting Amélia’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” the family said.

The appeal has already received thousands of pounds in donations, with people also being urged to share the page if they are unable to contribute financially.

Grampound Road Cricket Club has also paid tribute to Amélia following the incident at the club.

In a statement, club chairman Lewis Sanders said the incident was believed to have been a medical emergency and was not connected to cricket.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family, friends and everyone who knew and loved her at this unimaginably difficult time,” he said. “We will respect the family’s privacy and ask others to do the same.”

The club also paid tribute to those who responded to the emergency, including people who provided immediate first aid and members of the emergency services.

“We would also like to thank all those who responded on Thursday evening, particularly those who provided immediate first aid and the emergency services including the Cornwall Air Ambulance,” said Mr Sanders.

The family has thanked everyone for their kindness, generosity, thoughts and prayers for Amélia and her loved ones.
