THE people of Saltash have put their best foot forward to keep a 155-year-old tradition alive, with a sell-out crowd turning out for the town’s annual Beating the Bounds walk.
The five-mile route took participants around the ancient parish boundary, visiting historic stones and carrying out traditional ceremonies that have linked generations of Saltash residents since 1871.
Once an important fixture in communities across the country, Beating the Bounds helped residents learn the limits of their parish while asking for blessings for the protection and prosperity of the land.
Saltash is among the towns still keeping the custom alive, with walkers stopping at each boundary stone and taking part in the traditional practice of “bouncing”.
The event combined local history, community spirit and a healthy dose of exercise, with Cllr Pete Samuels stepping into the role of Town Crier to deliver a traditional cry.
After completing the walk, participants were rewarded for their efforts with a cream tea at Isambard House, rounding off the day with a distinctly Cornish touch.
Saltash Town Council praised the response, thanking everyone who helped make the event a success.
Cllr Brenda Samuels supplied homemade scones, while the council’s service delivery team ensured the boundary stones were maintained and accessible ahead of the walk.
Revd Laura Bushell Hawke blessed the stones, Martin Lister led participants along the route and Saltash Rotary Club marshalled the walk to help everything run smoothly.
Although the original purpose was practical – ensuring knowledge of parish boundaries was passed from one generation to the next – the annual walk has become an opportunity for residents to celebrate Saltash’s heritage and enjoy the surrounding area together.
With more than a century and a half of history behind it, this year’s turnout demonstrated that the appetite for the tradition remains strong.
