RAIN, mud and a tractor or two coming to the rescue could not stop crowds flocking to one of South East Cornwall’s biggest family events over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The Great Trethew Vintage Rally returned to Blackadon Farm at Horningtops for three days, with visitors turning out in force despite the challenging conditions.
Rally spokesperson Kirstie Dickson said: “Considering the weather, particularly after we’d had so much sunshine and how boggy it was, the amount of people who turned up was absolutely amazing.
“I think everyone was determined not to let a bit of rain and mud spoil their weekend. The video I put on Facebook of a car being pulled out of the car park by a tractor pretty much summed up the weekend!”
The annual event delivered its usual feast of vintage machinery, with historic tractors, steam traction engines, classic motorcycles, agricultural equipment and horticultural machinery all on display.
Visitors were also treated to tractor pulling competitions, ring parades, dancing diggers and tractor taxi rides, while children could enjoy their own activity zone.
The entertainment continued away from the machinery, with trade and craft stands, a dog show, live music and a licensed bar adding to the festival atmosphere.
Kirstie paid tribute to the army of volunteers who worked behind the scenes to keep the rally running despite the conditions.
“What really needs to be highlighted is how well all the volunteers managed the whole event,” she said. “We were very much on the edge of the weather this year, but they managed to pull the whole event off successfully in really challenging circumstances.”
The rally also continues to support good causes, including Children’s Hospice South West, Cornwall Air Ambulance and the Blood Bikes, having donated more than £18,000 over the years.
Already planning for next year’s event has begun.
