EFFORTS are being made to find a new location for Truro Post Office ahead of its closure.

Truro BID, Truro City Council, Cornwall Council and several businesses are looking to find a new premises following the announcement Truro Post Office in TG Jones on Pydar Street will close on Tuesday, October 6. They are keen to prevent a gap in Truro Post Office being open for business as it is the only branch in the area that offers passports, car tax, travel money and business banking services.

There has been no announcement on the future of the TG Jones branch in Pydar Street. TG Jones is closing up to 150 former WHSmith-rebranded stores as part of a massive nationwide restructuring plan approved by the High Court to rescue the business from insolvency.

Truro Moresk and Trehaverne Cornwall councillor Steven Webb said: “We do not know what is happening to the TG Jones store in Truro, but the post office is publicly looking for somewhere else.

“Truro needs a full-service Post Office on the high street, and it needs to open before this one shuts. It is important there is no gap as the other branches nearby don't do passports, car tax, travel money or business banking. The minute a post office closes it is very hard to get it back. It is almost impossible.

“I’m working with Truro BID, Truro City Council, Cornwall Council and businesses to find an alternative premises for Truro Post Office. I understand a couple of stores have approached the Post Office about offering spaces but I’ve not heard what the outcome is.

“I'll be fighting to keep the post office open. I'm in there several times a week and there's usually a queue. This isn't closing because nobody uses it.”
