A HOTEL in Newquay has denied it is housing asylum seekers following fears raised in the community.

The Sandy Lodge Hotel in Hilgrove Road has spoken out after receiving emails and telephone calls inquiring whether they are still providing “emergency accommodation.”

A spokesperson for the Sandy Lodge Hotel said: “People thought we were taking in asylum seekers. It was online but we did get quite a few people ringing us.”

The hotel posted online: “We’ve recently seen some reports and concerns within the local community regarding the use of Sandy Lodge Hotel for emergency accommodation in the past, so we wanted to clarify the current situation.

“For a period of time, we were proud to work alongside our local council and community partners, helping to provide accommodation for people who needed emergency housing.

“We were happy to play our part and support our local community during that time.

“However, we would like to confirm that Sandy Lodge Hotel has not housed emergency accommodation for over four months now, and this is no longer something we provide.

“We understand that there may still be some confusion due to reports or information circulating about the past, so we simply wanted to make the current position clear.

“We have always been proud to be part of the Newquay community and will continue to welcome our guests, holidaymakers, workers and visitors to Sandy Lodge. Thank you to our local community for your continued support.”

The Sandy Lodge Hotel stopped providing emergency accommodation ahead of the sentencing of triple murderer James Desborough. The 40-year-old lived at the hotel between December 2024 and April 2025, and it was where he befriended 57-year-old Claudio Aquilino and Daniel Coleman, 43, before dismembering and concealing their bodies. Police are now reviewing four unexplained deaths at the Sandy Lodge Hotel during the time Desborough was living there.
