PEOPLE were left awestruck after the nation’s flagship aircraft carrier sailed close to the Newquay shore on Sunday afternoon.
HMS Queen Elizabeth loomed large over buildings and local landmarks as the 284-metre-long warship weighed anchor for a short time before sailing up the coastline.

Chelsea Jeffrey, who photographed the ship, said: “The aircraft carrier was absolutely massive. It didn’t look real in the surroundings.
“If I didn't see it with my own eyes I would have guessed it was AI.”
Fisherman Phil Trebilcock added: “I’m not sure why HMS Queen Elizabeth came so close to shore. It was possibly to change a couple of the crew. That’s what generally happens.”
The Royal Nay stated the ship is conducting “planned training for operations around the UK and northern Europe, working alongside Allies to enhance collective security, deterrence and readiness."
HMS Queen Elizabeth’s Commanding Officer Captain Claire Thompson said: "We’ve returned from summer leave rested and ready for the next phase of our training.
“Sailing this autumn is a key milestone for both our NATO commitment, as the Afloat Command Platform and also on our journey back to the Royal Navy’s ‘very high readiness’ aircraft carrier.
“Sailing with an embarked battle staff, integration and training is essential whilst relearning the skills required to conduct safe and effective aviation as we ensure that we are prepared to deliver operational activity at the heart of NATO should it be required.”
It is the second time HMS Queen Elizabeth visited Newquay in less than five months having previously sailed along the coastline on May 18 during a training exercise.
The mighty warship can carry up to 40 aircraft, including F-35B Lightning II stealth jets and Merlin helicopters.
The vessel operates with a core crew of around 800 personnel, which can expand up to 1,600 when carrying a full air wing. It also features a distinctive twin-island flight deck and a ski-jump ramp instead of an American-style catapult system.
