PEOPLE are being asked to remove memorials that have been left to remember loved ones at a Newquay beauty spot.

Cornwall Council and Cormac have requested ribbons, flowers, small plaques and keepsakes tied to the clifftop fence at Barrowfields should be taken home as soon as possible as the structure is due to be replaced “imminently.”

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council and Cormac said: “If you've attached any personal items, memorials or decorations to the fencing at Barrowfields, please collect them as soon as possible. “Work to replace the clifftop fencing is due to start imminently, and any items left on the fence will need to be removed. They would like to reunite all items with their owners, but can't guarantee this if they have to be removed during the works. Thank you for your patience while Cornwall Council and Cormac carry out these improvements.”

The fencing is one part of a wider set of improvements at Barrowfields. Other improvements being carried out include new benches to replace the demolished shelters, which has divided public opinion. Many residents are glad to see the back of the shelters as they became havens for antisocial behaviour. But some people believe demolishing the shelters was the wrong decision as there will less areas to get out of bad weather when visiting the area.

Cornwall Council is replacing two shelters with benches after the “general public” started to avoid using the facilities. They also stated the shelters had reached the end of their “useful life” due to vandalism and storm damage. The council says the new seating will provide accessible places to sit and enjoy the open space, while creating a “safer” and more “welcoming environment” for visitors. Future replacement of the Narrowcliff guard railings overlooking Tolcarne is due to take place in 2027.
