Win's lost watch

A 92 year old pensioner from West Looe is appealing for help in hopefully finding a wristwatch.

Mrs Win Tildesly walked to the Spar Shop in West Looe on Saturday, February 16, taking a route from Downs Road into West Road then on to North Road. At some point she lost her watch and very much hopes that someone will find it.

'It is not worth anything' says Win, 'but it is of great sentimental value to me because my mother gave it to me 70 years ago. It is silver in colour and there could be a small reward for someone who finds it'.

Anyone finding the watch should pass it into Looe police station or contact 01503 263745.

Parish plans

for Lansallos

THE community in and around Polperro have the chance of helping to put together a parish plan aimed at tackling a broad range of social and health issues. There is to be an open evening at the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, February 26.

The plan will look at the way forward for Polperro and the surrounding villages in the parish of Lansallos and could include anything from transport issues to the loss of facilities in the old part of Polperro or local health concerns.

The evening has been organised by Lansallos Parish Council with support from Caradon District Council and is the first step in the parish plan process. Anyone living in the parish is encouraged to join in, as are local clubs, societies and businesses. The issues raised at the evening will be used to generate a questionnaire on a range of community concerns that will be distributed to all households. The answers will later be used to put together the parish plan and support grant applications for projects and facilities for the area.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available from the Countryside Agency to help with parish plans and 11 other parishes within Caradon are currently in various stages of development.

Caradon Councillor Jean Hubbard (Lansallos Ward) said" 'I would urge anyone interested in Polperro or Lansallos to come along to the open evening. A little of your time sharing your ideas could make a big difference to the future of our community'.

Lord Mayor's ball

THE annual ball in honour of the Lord Mayor of Polperro - this year it is Terry Bicknell - takes place at the Royal British Legion, this Saturday, February 23. It is a free event to which all are welcome. There is a live band (MOR), from about 9pm onwards.

The event starts the ball rolling for this year's Polperro Festival of Arts which runs from June 15-23, for which plans are already forging ahead. Anyone requiring information should contact Teddy Pilcher on 01503 272129.

Bullers Quizzes

for The Ryder

THE generous 'quizsters' at the Bullers Arms, East Looe, have raised another £500 for charity from their Monday night charity quizzes. The prizes for each quiz are donated by the pub so that every penny raised from participants who pay £1 each to enter, is collected for a nominated local charity.

This time it was the turn of the Ryder Project, with Bob Skelly handing over the cash to Tony White of Polperro, where the former old Looe lifeboat is kept during the summer months at the port's Heritage Museum.

Tony thanked everyone for the fantastic donation and explained how at least £2,000 a year has to be raised to keep Ryder in a seaworthy and display condition. He said that insurance alone costs some £700.

Ryder was the last of the pulling and sailing lifeboats to be stationed at Looe, from 1902-1930, and 2002 is her centenary year. She will be seen in Looe for the Great Cornish Raft Race on June 9 and will be a focal point for the Festival of the Sea in Looe on June 21, 22, and 23.

Ryder was built at the Thames Ironworks on Bow Creek in London and as part of her centenary celebrations it is intended to enter her in the Great River Race on the Thames on September 7. The race finish at Greenwich is about half a mile from where she was built.

The presentation night at The Bullers was also the start of more fundraising for a charity yet to be decided, when £87 was made from a special sausage tasting session, courtesy of Fowey butcher Richard Kittow, who made and donated six different varieties of bangers for the event.

Curator is sought

THE East Looe Town Trust is looking for a person to take over the mainly volunteer post (with a small honorarium) as curator of the Old Guildhall Museum, during the forthcoming season. This is to replace Mrs Jeanne Dingle who has recently retired from the position. A Trust spokesperson said anyone applying should have an interest in and some knowledge of the history of Looe. Applicants should contact the Trust Office at The Guildhall, East Looe.

The Trust is to hold an open meeting when the public are invited to attend, on Tuesday, March 7, at 7pm, at The Guildhall.

Christian Aid meeting

Looe and District Christian Aid Committee recently held their annual general meeting in Riverside Church, West Looe. The Chairman, Mr John Trethewey, thanked everyone for their hard work throughout the year. Over £3,000 had been sent to headquarters for various appeals.

This was £1,000 more than last year.

Many thanks are extended to 'Churches Together' Cornerstone Shop for a most generous donation, to Polperro Sunday School, Pelynt Male Voice Choir, Alan and Bridget Bates at the Barbican Inn, the Porthpyra Singers, the Laira Youth Band (Plymouth) to the Rev Margaret Oxenham and the Riverside Church Council and to all those who have supported Christian Aid Throughout 2001.

Chambers's annual meeting

Members and their guests are invited to attend the Looe, Polperro and District Chamber AGM where the agenda includes the launch of an exciting new document 'Catching the Tide' - a vision for the town, which builds upon its substantial maritime heritage and association with tourism.

The paper is intended to facilitate discussion and, finally, to result in an action plan which will attract substantial funding to allow Looe to retain its position as a premier tourism destination in Cornwall and the whole South West. Other aspects of the Chambers strategy to 'Make Business Better' is a comprehensive web site proposal and shopping guide.

Elections will also take place at the AGM on Tuesday March 5th 7.00pm for 7.30pm Hannafore Point Hotel, West Looe, with the positions of Chairman, Vice Chairman, President, Treasurer & Secretary, plus 5 executive committee members to be filled.

Nominations should be made in writing/email one week prior to the AGM by 28th February.
