AN American social media influencer with more than four-million followers online has said he is still ‘looking for the bland food America says the UK has’ after being wowed by some of Cornwall’s finest culinary offerings.
Kalani Ghost Hunter, has built up a following of more than four-million people online as he travels across the UK to put some of the stereotypes about British culture — and particularly its food — to the test.
Recently the Tennessean made his way to the south coast, stopping in at a number of spots to try ‘spicy spuds’ in Plymouth, a home-cooked roast dinner, and of course some of the delicacies on offer here in Cornwall.
During his time in the Duchy, Kalani paid a visit to what he called ‘the most famous ice cream shop in St Ives’ to have his first taste of Cornish ice cream. Donning his signature cowboy hat, he delved into a scoop of vanilla clotted cream and ‘Shipwreck’ salted caramel.
Visibly wowed during his first taste, the influencer described it as ‘one of the nicest vanillas’ he’d ever had, arguing that the Cornish milk was ‘the real deal’ with ‘such good flavour’. Polishing off the two tubs, Kalani even demonstrated his understanding of British sarcasm, telling the camera: “Well America, you were right, this was incredibly bland, tasteless, the raw ingredients didn’t make a difference, I wish it had palm oil...”
However, it wasn’t just food that Kalani explored during his visit, he of course had to take a trip to Cornwall’s ‘most haunted pub’ - Jamaica Inn in Bolventor. The paranormal enthusiast, described the spot as ‘incredible’ as he detailed some of the inn’s most famous tales.
But a visit to the Duchy wouldn’t be complete without the taste of a real Cornish pasty, and the influencer got to try the very best. While in Cornwall, Kalani showed more than 215,000 viewers on Tik Tok alone, his experience of trying a homemade pasty, after he was invited by a resident to try their mother’s recipe.
Enjoying a windy day on Carne beach, the influencer enjoyed his first bites of the mammoth meal that he called the best pasty he’d ever had, ‘absolutely beautiful’ and even made him want to kiss the ‘sweet woman’ that crafted it.
