A FAMILY has raised more than £10,000 to bring a St Ives mother home after she died suddenly whilst on holiday.

Elizabeth “Liz” Barnes passed away unexpectedly during a visit to Belgium with her husband Flight Lieutenant Jon Barnes and two friends on Saturday, October 24.

Her daughter, Chloe Barnes, started a Gofundme after being given "the hard news of the cost to bring her home,” which exceeded the £10,000 target in less than two days following 324 donations.

Tributes have been paid for the popular former Air Cadets Warrant Officer who spent years guiding and encouraging youngsters as a sports officer.

Chloe said: "She was much loved for many different reasons far and wide within the UK."

A spokesperson for Plymouth & Cornwall Wing Air Cadets said: “In addition to serving on a number of West Cornwall Squadrons, Warrant Officer Barnes spent many years as the Wing Sports Officer, ensuring the Wing was represented at regional events and, could always be found on the drill square during NCOs courses, providing guidance and encouragement to generations of cadets.

“In latter years, Liz was also the organisational force behind Wing Dinners where her attention to detail ensured successful events. Our thoughts are very much with all her family at this sad and difficult time.”

A spokesperson for the 1900 West Cornwall Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets, added: “Liz was both a cadet and staff member with 1900, under various squadron names, in the 1990’s and 2000’s. Liz will be greatly missed by all in the RAFAC.”

Liz's sister-in-law Jessie-Rhae Sammels said on social media: "My family can rest easily tonight knowing that our Liz is going to be coming home. This has lifted so many of our spirits and given hope all day.

"If you have donated or even shared, resulting in donations, just know you have made a massive difference to our family."
