Bowling coffees
FOWEY Bowling club is taking part in the Macmillan Nurses' 'World's biggest coffee morning event' and holding a get together on September 29 from l0am until noon.
Their coffee morning, at the bowling club, will also involve a raffle and stalls. Last year they raised £637 for the charity.
A tree weekend
A TREE weekend is to be held at the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery in Cott Road, Lostwithiel on September 23 and 24.
Those attending can select and label the tree they want, and reserve it for November, when the trees will be ready to be dug. Included in the range are Cut Leaf Alder, Ornamental Pear, Ornamental Thorn, English Oak, Himalayan White Birch and Magnolian Lime.
Manager Tracy Wilson, a radio phone-in gardening expert, said the weekend is special 'because throughout the year customers can't have access to the fields where the trees are grown because of health and safety regulations'.
First summer
fayre is a success
AN estimated 1500 people came to the first Summer Fayre for the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery at Lostwithiel recently.
Local craftspeople had set up their stalls among the plants and St Breward Silver Band could be heard across the valley as they played on the Duchy lawn, and Head Forester Geraint Richards led guided walks through the surrounding woodlands.
Some people bought their own picnics, others indulged in cream teas, while wild boar was served from the barbecue throughout the day.
Manager Tracey Wilson said: 'The day a wonderful success, and many people were very complimentary about the atmosphere and setting. To those who have asked if the the fayre will become an annual event the answer is year, and we may even hold a Christmas Fayre.'
Donations from proceeds taken on the day were made to the charity DEBRA (Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association) by the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery and many of the traders.
Awards presentation
FOWEY in Bloom is to hold a garden party on September 27 at which town mayor, Rhona Foster, will present cups and certificates to the organisation's gardens competition winners.
The event will be held at 2pm by invitation of Catherine Jane and proceeds will be divided between Fowey in Bloom and Fowey Hospital.
Ross Poldark and
a Trenython ball
ACTOR Robin Ellis was the guest of honour at a lavish Poldark Ball, held at Trenython Manor at the weekend.
The event was held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first television showing of the Poldark series, in which Robin Ellis played the hero, Ross Poldark. He attended with his wife, Meredith.
The aim of the evening was to recreate the Truro Ball, which featured in the Poldark novels, and those who attended dressed in true l8th century style. They wore sumptuous dresses and waistcoats, arrived in horse-drawn carriages, and dined on smoked salmon and roast saddle of lamb.
Among those attending were Joseph Gustin from Maryland USA, and his daughter Clare. They had travelled to Cornwall to see where the series was filmed, and attend the ball. Others taking part in style were Ian and Marylou Petter of Gunnislake and Marie Dimichele of Lostwithiel.
Alpha supper

Anyone who is interested in finding out more about the course is invited to attend, at 7.15pm. Details and invitations are available from Alpha co-ordinator Wendy Saunders, or from the Vicarage.
