160 years of music
HAVING taken on the huge task of compering the Liskeard Business Awards Gala Night the previous week I was very honoured to be invited to return to the stage at Liskeard’s Public Hall to compere an evening of music and singing marking the 160th anniversary of St Pinnock Band on Saturday, October 17.
The band, led by musical director Tim Whitehead, were supported on the night by St Pinnock Youth Band and Cornwall Rock Choir in an evening of rousing entertainment before an appreciative audience of VIPs and local guests including the mayor of Liskeard Cllr David Braithwaite, mayor of Looe Cllr Stephen Remington, county councillor for Liskeard Jane Pascoe and former-mayor of Looe Armand Toms.
The Youth Band, led by Musical Director Jane Whitehead kicked off the evening with an eclectic mix of Bruno Mars, Bizet and Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' for their opening set.
The Rock Choir, led by musical director Marcus Alleyne and whose numbers filled the entire stage, were a glorious bundle of animated energy belting out classic hits from Erasure, Keane and 60s legends The Monkees.
Tim Whitehead and his band brought the first half of the concert to a close with performances of 'Semper Fidelis,' 'Lake of the Moon,' their own 'three tenor' rendition of 'Trio Con Brio' featuring Jane Whitehead, Kath Horsley and Liz Trinder and finally Michael Flatley's epic Riverdance introducing soloist Becky Tamblyn.
The second half of the concert was led by the Rock Choir who treated us all to another medley of classic tunes featuring Guns n Roses, Lewis Capaldi and the late, great Whitney Houston.
As was appropriate, the final 'set' of the evening belonged to St Pinnock Band who started with a section of tribute-to-Queen classics.
This was followed by the return of soloist Becky Tamblyn with her superb rendition of 'I dream a dream' from Les Miserables.
Cllr Pascoe and Armand Toms were invited to say words of tribute to the band on this auspicious occasion before they wrapped up.
