A CORNISH produced folk horror short film is set for its worldwide digital release on three global platforms this week.
Written by Cornish writer Callum Mitchell and produced by Denzil Monk, founder of Cornish ecosophical production house Bosena, Pen Mari merges the Welsh folk tradition of the Mari Lwyd with elements of Montol, Penzance’s midwinter celebration.
Based on a true story, the darkly comic folk horror Pen Mari (Mare’s Head) follows a man who is drawn into the black market for animal body parts as he tries to honour a Celtic folk tradition.
Produced by Bosena, the Cornish production company behind Mark Jenkin’s Rose of Nevada and BIFA-winning Enys Men, Pen Mari will be released in the days leading up to Halloween, the start of the dark half of the year in Celtic tradition, across a hat-trick of global platforms.
The film is set for a global digital release on WeTransfer’s arts platform, WePresent, which acts as the company’s cultural torchbearer to a monthly audience of approximately three million in 190 countries.
It will also be shown on Short of the Week, which is a launchpad for a new generation of filmmakers, as well as on Vimeo Staff Picks, which is a curated, worldwide showcase of short films.
Bosena founder Denzil Monk said: “With Bosena, we are drawn to rural or coastal contexts as rich material and perspectives, rather than limitations. Joining together with director Siôn Marshall-Waters to make this Welsh/Cornish Celtic storytelling ‘cocktail’ has been a creative pleasure and joy.
“We’re honoured to have BFI NETWORK, WePresent, Vimeo and Short of the Week working with us to give this purposefully unsettling rural short its global outing, following the strong reactions at film festivals.”
