ONE of the most compelling live acts on the contemporary folk scene is coming to Calstock Arts on Friday, December 11.

Suthering (Julu Irvine and Heg Brignall) are a fearless duo whose emotionally-charged songwriting tackles politics, mental health, feminism and LGBTQ+ rights with warmth, humour and honesty.

Following years of extensive touring, headline shows and appearances at major UK festivals, Suthering have earned a reputation as one of the most compelling live acts.

Their performances are built around soaring vocal harmonies, terrific moments of a cappella, and an intimate blend of piano, fingerstyle guitar, whistles and flutes that can captivate a festival crowd as effortlessly as they can hold a room in pin-drop silence.

Their 2024 album Leave A Light On, produced by Sean Lakeman, marked a bold evolution in sound, weaving pop and indie influences into their folk roots. The record combines deeply personal songwriting with modern protest.

Lead single Maggie, inspired by the overturning of Roe v. Wade, is a stirring anthem for bodily autonomy and social justice.

Beyond the stage, Julu and Heg are the founders of Tavistock Pride, extending their commitment to equality far beyond their music by creating spaces that celebrate and support LGBTQ+ communities.

Currently writing their third studio album, Suthering continue to push the boundaries of contemporary folk with songs of protest, pride, hope and belonging. Whether performing on an intimate acoustic stage or in front of a festival audience, they leave listeners inspired and connected.

Suthering found their name in a book called Landmarks by Robert MacFarlane. The word, meaning "the sound of the wind through the trees" comes from a John Clare poem and it perfectly captures the duo’s love of nature, a theme which can be found woven into their music.

Doors and bar opens at 7pm, with the performance beginning at 8pm.
