A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched to help a disabled woman from Camborne fulfil her bucket list after she was given 12 months left to live.
The family of 21-year-old Sophie Matthews, who has Down’s syndrome, have started gofundme to help send her on holiday, take the plunge on a skydive, get pampered on a spa day and enjoy some fast fair rides.
Their lives were shattered following Sophie being diagnosed with a brain tumour after she initially had a stroke. The family would like to use some of the funds raised to have a second opinion following the terminal tumour diagnosis.
Sophie’s auntie Kirsty Dower said: “Sophie‘s mum Kimberley wants to help her daughter who is very special in many ways fulfil her bucket list. She has the biggest, beautiful heart of all hearts who got little time on this earth.
“Sophie was born with Down’s syndrome and has brought so much love into this world. She was a bubbly, outgoing young lady until one day she collapsed.
“She went to the hospital where she got diagnosed with a bad chest infection, possibly sepsis. She was ill for many weeks. Her mum took her back to the hospital where they told her she had experienced a stroke.
“They did a MRI scan and saw a shadow on the brain, but because it was a mild stroke they told us she would recover. If only that was the case.
“Our lives have completely been shattered after Sophie was diagnosed with a brain tumour and has only got 12months to live. They sent her home with painkillers and there’s nothing else they could do.
“We want a second opinion for sure. Sophie is a loving big sister who looks after everyone. She’s only 21 years old. Sophie went to college achieved a distinction in her maths.
“But now we have little time to fulfil her wishes. Sophie wanted to go away on holiday with her little sister and brother. She also wants to enjoy a nice spa day with her big brother and mum. Even a skydive and fast fair rides she as she loves highs and has no fear.
“But the fear we have of losing her. It would be really appreciated by myself and Kimberley if people donate to the gofundme. Kimberley has been a single mum of four for many years. She’s been mum, dad and has brought this special girl up to be the most beautiful caring loving young girl. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. Over £180 raised so far has already surpassed the original £150 target, with support continuing to grow.
“Many thanks to everyone for reading Sophie’s story. Please hold your loved ones tight and make everyday count.”
